Ismail Sabri: SOP change doesn't mean flip-flop

Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob dismissed claims that the government flip-flopped when it made changes to the standard operating procedures (SOP).

Ismail explained that the government did not amend the SOP based on whims, but rather decisions were made to protect the people's livelihood.

"Many people are quite confused with the changes in the SOP. They say (the government ) flip-flopped.

"I would like to inform you that these (changes) are not flip-flops, but changes were made based on current needs and situations," he said in a media briefing today.

Ismail stressed that if the government were to stick to strict SOP as the first movement control order (MCO 1.0), businesses would not be allowed to operate.

"Based on the MCO, businesses are not allowed to operate. We changed our approach to help people earn income, but we also impose a strict SOP (to the businesses).

"If one were to compare MCO 1.0 and MCO 2.0, there were many changes. For certain interests, we have to amend the SOP.

"If we don't do that, I believe there will be many people whose lives will be affected as they don't earn money," he said.

Under MCO 2.0, the government had allowed retail businesses and factories to operate, but some subsections of the economy, such as pubs and beauty salons, were not allowed to reopen. - Mkini
