Putrajaya has created a new ministerial portfolio - national covid-19 immunisation programme coordinator - and this will be helmed by Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin.
Khairy already holds the science, technology and innovation portfolio.
Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, in a televised address today, said Khairy will lead a special team dealing with logistics and coordination among states and government agencies.
"This will allow the Health Ministry to focus on health services in handling the spread of Covid-19, which is still showing worrying trends," he said.
Describing this as Malaysia's largest immunisation programme ever, Muhyiddin said the logistics will be challenging.
There will be 600 storage facilities for the vaccines and many facilities - private, public, stadiums, convention halls, community halls and universities - will be used as vaccination centres.
He said the first phase of vaccinations will involve 500,000 frontliners and is expected to be completed by April.
The second phase will involve at-risk groups - the elderly and the frail - and will take place between April and August, involving 9.4 million people.
The final phase will take place between May and February next year, involving all other adults. - Mkini
