‘Malaysia needs to be more granular in data analysis to handle Covid-19’

Malaysia needs to be more granular in the data analysis in order to have a better grip in handling the Covid-19 pandemic, said Prime Minister's Special Adviser on Public Health Dr Jemilah Mahmood.

As Covid-19 has hit the country for over a year, she said the health industry has now utilised artificial intelligence and machine learning.

"We now give the team of data scientist and embedded within the Health Ministry (MOH) to relook, relearn and unlearn and relearn (again) some of the things that we have been doing,” she said today at Ideas Malaysia Outlook Conference 2021 titled ‘Society after Covid-19: What Will Change and What Have We Learnt?’

Jemilah also said Malaysia has become much better equipped to manage Covid-19 patients and the current mortality rate in the country is about 0.4 per cent, which is among the lowest in the world.

“This (the low mortality rate) is really admirable. We have to take our hats off to the infectious disease experts, whether in universities or government, who have actually figured out how to manage the patients well,” she said.

Meanwhile, Jemilah said Malaysia has come to learn that it is also essential to ensure the health condition of foreign workers in the country to be taken care of too.

If not, she said it would only put Malaysians at risk as they are living in the community.
