Miri lockup rape case: Investigation paper sent to Bukit Aman

Sarawak police have completed an investigation into a rape case which occurred three weeks ago in the Miri central police station, said state police commissioner Aidi Ismail.

The investigation paper was sent to Bukit Aman and the Attorney-General's Chamber (AGC) last week for further action.

“We have completed our investigation and the report has been sent to Bukit Aman as well as the AGC last Tuesday.

“They will go through our findings and suggestions, and we are waiting for the green light from Bukit Aman to take further action,” Aidi told Malaysiakini when asked when the police officers on duty at the time of the incident would be charged.

On Jan 16, DAP Senator Alan Ling revealed that a 16-year-old girl was raped by a 19-year-old underage offender while in police custody at the station. The victim subsequently lodged a police report.

The incident took place on Jan 9 when the male detainee, whom she claimed had the key to her cell, opened her cell door and raped her in the lockup's toilet.

Two police officers on duty at the time have been suspended

The rapist who was charged on Jan 12 pleaded guilty. He, however, has not been sentenced pending a social report. The case is set for re-mention on Feb 9.

Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador had said everyone involved in the incident will be charged but he did not say if this included negligent officers.

Police found that the closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera in the lockup did not have a recording function and can only be monitored by personnel on duty. Hence, the footage was unavailable.  - Mkini
