Najib’s SRC appeal hearing deferred to April

Najib Razak has submitted 307 grounds in his petition of appeal against his conviction and sentence in the SRC International corruption case.

PUTRAJAYA: The hearing of Najib Razak’s appeal against his conviction on seven counts of corruption in relation to RM42 million belonging to SRC International has been deferred by two months.

The Court of Appeal will now hear the appeal for 13 days from April 5. The court had on Oct 1 fixed 12 days from Feb 15 for the hearing.

The new dates were scheduled after case management before Court of Appeal deputy registrars Darmafikri Abu Adam and N Kanageswari today.

Lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah and Nur Syahirah Hanapiah appeared for Najib while deputy public prosecutor Mohd Ashrof Adrin Kamaril represented the prosecution.

Nur Syahirah said both parties would receive amended appeal records from the court on Feb 8.

The parties have been instructed to file their written submissions by March 1 and replies by March 19.

Further case management will be held on Feb 22.

Najib had submitted 307 grounds in his petition of appeal on why he should be acquitted of the charges.

On July 28, High Court Judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali sentenced the former prime minister to 12 years’ jail and ordered him to pay a RM210 million fine.

Nazlan had found Najib guilty of abuse of power, criminal breach of trust and money laundering.

He allowed Najib’s application to stay the jail sentence and fine but the former prime minister was asked to post a RM2 million bail, which he did. - FMT
