Overcrowding alleged at Kota Kinabalu night market, cops step in to help

KOTA KINABALU: Concerns about overcrowding at a night market on Gaya Street here were alleviated after police stepped in to address the situation.

Malaysians on social media were sharing pictures and posts on Friday (Feb 19), allegedly of many people thronging the night market, raising worry that the standard operating procedure (SOP) was not being adhered to.

Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK), however, assured that the situation was under control and from observations, both the public and stall operators present were following the SOP.

In a statement issued on their Facebook page, DBKK said they followed-up on information about overcrowding at the Api-Api Night Food Market, which normally starts at 6pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

"Thank you to the police for helping to control the situation at the market.

"Mayor Noorliza Awang Alip also stopped by to inspect the market last night," read the post.

Some expressed relief in the comments, stating that DBKK has done well and also praised the Mayor's effort to come down to see the situation for herself.

Suggestions in the comments section included for customers to leave as soon as they are done with their shopping and to give others a chance to make their purchases.- Star
