The government has sought to address concerns that some children are being left behind in their studies as they do not have the means to go online, where most lessons are now taking place during the movement control order (MCO).
"The government realises that students come from various backgrounds, some are from urban areas, rural areas or the interiors.
"Therefore, we accept the reality that the online home-based teaching and learning module (PdPR) still cannot be implemented holistically within a short time frame.
"This is because a large portion of students do not possess suitable devices, and obstacles to accessing the internet are also a factor," Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said when launching a dedicated education television channel today.
Muhyiddin said he believes that DidikTV can help children who are struggling with remote learning.
"I am confident that the Education Ministry's DidikTV can help in the implementation of PdPR, particularly for students who do not have online access to education.
"Parents can also spend time with their children to tune in to DidikTV," he said.
DidikTV is a collaboration between Media Prima, the channel owner, with the Education Ministry.
The partnership saw NTV7 converted into a full-time channel, which will air from 7am to 12am daily, with content dedicated to school children.
"This is part of the Education Ministry's continuous effort to improve access to quality education for all students in the country.
"DidikTV will air programmes based on the Education Ministry's curriculum and co-curriculum.
"It will also air news about education, ranging from pre-school to Form 6. The programmes will be based on edutainment and also content produced by students," Muhyiddin said.
Previously, DidikTV was only a programme that was allocated slots on various channels, including TV Okey, RTM, Astro and NTV7.
Its conversion into a dedicated TV channel came amid months of complaints that students, particularly from vulnerable and low-income communities, were not able to keep up with online learning.
