Postpone SPM exam for two weeks, says Najib

PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Najib Razak has urged the government to come up with solutions for students and parents worried over lack of time to prepare for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination.

He suggested that the exam, scheduled for Feb 22, be postponed for two weeks so that those taking it may attend extra lessons after the Chinese New Year public holidays.

Alternatively, if the exams could not be postponed any further “maybe online lessons or tutorials can be provided until the exam starts”, he said.

Najib said many students and their parents were anxious about the lack of preparation for the examination after being told today that schools would be closed again starting from Tuesday (Feb 9).

“This means that they only had the opportunity to attend 14 days of classes in a period of over three months. On top of that, the trial examinations were held almost four months ago,” he said. “Is 15 days of schooling in the last three months enough time for them to prepare to face SPM?”

He also questioned why the education ministry asked schools to close again only 14 days before the exam.

The new school year began on Jan 20 for students facing major public examinations. The SPM examination, and its vocational equivalent, is taken by pupils in Form 5 at the end of their secondary education. - FMT
