Ramesh Rao to be charged over controversial tweet

Pertubuhan Minda dan Sosial Prihatin Malaysia NGO president Ramesh Rao will be charged at the Taiping Sessions Court on his controversial tweet regarding the High Court judge who presided over former premier Najib Abdul Razak's SRC International case last year.

A source confirmed with Malaysiakini that he will be slapped with one charge under Section 233 of the Multimedia and Communications Act 1998 on Wednesday.

"He will be charged at the Taiping Sessions Court at 9am on Feb 10," said the source.

This came six months after Bukit Aman's Classified Criminal Investigation Department launched a probe against him after a report on the matter was lodged by former Bersatu member Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rahman on July 30 last year.

Meanwhile, Afzanizam clarified on his Facebook page that he lodged the report when he was the Bukit Gantang Bersatu information chief. He is now the president of the Tun Mahathir Fan Club in Perak.

On July 28, 2020, judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali ruled that Najib was guilty of seven charges related to the RM42 million from SRC International case.

The charges concerned abuse of power, criminal breach of trust (CBT) and money laundering.

On the same day, Ramesh, who is seen as Najib's staunch supporter, via a tweet, claimed that Nazlan is former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s grandnephew.

Mahathir's daughter Marina had dismissed Ramesh's allegation as untrue.

"We should be flattered that they think such a learned judge is related to us but he's not," she said.

Last month, Nazlan was transferred back to the civil courts.

He was previously on the bench at the Commercial High Court before being transferred to the Criminal High Court in July 2018. - Mkini
