PASIR MAS: Sand dredging works at a Kelantan river site located near the place where several houses were damaged due to erosion, must be temporarily stopped.
Pasir Mas member of parliament, Ahmad Fadhli Shaari said such action must be taken to prevent a repeat of the tragedy that occurred in Kampung Jalan Pohon Celagi.
"The incident has shocked everybody. Therefore, I would like to urge the company involved in the works to stop their operations temporarily or until the Public Works Department (PWD) as well as the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) have completed their study on the cause of the erosion," he said.
Ahmad Fadhli, who is Pas Youth deputy chief was speaking to reporters after presenting donations to villagers who were affected by the incident here today.
He said Environment and Water Minister Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man has been informed about the incident.
He urged the federal government to announce an immediate allocation to solve the problem.
The state government has directed the state PWD and state DID to study the cause of the erosion that resulted in nearly 50 villagers being evacuated.
Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob had said today that the two departments were also told to estimate the cost for immediate repair works for the affected area.
Some 50 villagers in Kampung Jalan Pohon Celagi were ordered to move out following soil erosion near their homes this morning.
The incident occurred between 2.30am and 6.30am after a river is believed to have burst its banks. - NST
