Students without uniform allowed to wear other suitable clothes to school

The Education Ministry has relaxed regulations by allowing primary school students to wear attire deemed suitable when they return to class next month.

The ministry's announcement today followed a joint statement by seven opposition lawmakers, including former education minister Maszlee Malik, who urged the ministry to relax the rules on school uniforms.

The ministry stated that the leeway is given from March 1 to 26.

"The Education Ministry has received inquiries from parents about the regulations on school uniforms when the schooling sessions open later.

"Taking into account the current situation, the ministry would like to inform that students who don't have school uniforms are allowed to wear appropriate and suitable attire when they attend school," the statement read.

It hoped that the permission would allow students to return to school.

Schools will reopen in stages starting March.

Pre-schoolers, Standard 1 and Standard 2 students will be back in school on March 1, while those in Standard 3 to 6 will resume schooling on March 8.

Secondary schools will reopen starting April 5. - Mkini
