KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): To spread some Chinese New Year (CNY) cheer amid the Covid-19 pandemic, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has produced a short film that retells – with a touch of humour – a timeless story about a mythical beast, the Nian, that terrorises the people every Lunar New Year eve.

TNB Chief Corporate Services Officer Mohamad Ariff Zainol in a statement Tuesday (Feb 2) said wiht the short film, TNB hoped to encourage positive energy in the new year on the back of the multitude of challenges brought about by Covid-19.

"Many are looking to make a new start in 2021 and with this short film, we want to inspire people to embrace the new year with a spirit of joy and unity. For when we have positive energy, together we can overcome any adversity," he said.

Ariff added that the short film offers age-old wisdom and timeless folklore that highlights the spirit of joy and unity that underlies CNY traditions by telling the Chinese legend of Nian with a twist.

Titled "Nian-tastic New Start" and directed by award-winning director Quek Shio Chuan, the story revolves around a group of terrified villagers who seek the help of a wise master in defeating Nian, and return peace and prosperity to their village.

With the advice of the master, they get rid of the proverbial beast with the colour red, loud sounds and bright lights, reflecting the Chinese traditions today such as wearing red apparel, having cheerful family reunions, making noise from the loud beating of drums and lighting firecrackers like how it was done to intimidate the Nian.

"Nian-tastic New Start" is scheduled to go live Tuesday on YouTube (www.youtube.com/TENAGAofficial) and will be aired on terrestrial TV channels from Feb 10 onwards. – Bernama
