UUM prof ordered to pay RM5,000 to Mujahid after court sets aside defamation suit

The High Court in Kuala Lumpur has set aside a defamation suit by Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) professor Kamarul Zaman Yusoff against Parit Buntar MP Mujahid Yusof Rawa today.

Kamarul (above) had filed the suit on July 28 last year over a 2017 commentary titled Disiplin ilmu bukan sentimen murahan (academic discipline, not cheap sentiments) written by Mujahid that was critical of the lecturer.

Judge Rozana Ali Yusof, in setting aside the lawsuit, also ordered Kamarul to pay the Amanah vice-president RM5,000 in costs.

When contacted, Mujahid's lawyer Noorazmi Zakari said they had applied to strike out the lawsuit saying it was an abuse of the court process.

This as Kamarul had previously used the article he wanted to cite Mujahid for in a past suit, which he later retracted after apologising to the lawmaker.

In 2017, Mujahid had sued Kamarul after the lecturer called him a DAP kuda tunggangan (stooge).

Kamarul then filed a countersuit, citing the Disiplin ilmu bukan sentimen murahan commentary that Mujahid wrote in response to the DAP stooge remarks.

However, in Nov 2018, Kamarul retracted the countersuit and apologised to Mujahid as part of a settlement deal. - Mkini
