GEORGE TOWN: Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow will be the first individual in Penang to receive the Covid-19 vaccine.

Speaking at a ceremony to welcome the arrival of 16,000 vaccine doses at the Penang International Airport here this afternoon, Chow said as the state's main leader who supports the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme, he is prepared to take the lead to receive the vaccine first.

"Today is a significant day as we welcome the arrival of the Covid-19 vaccine in Penang.

"The Penang government is committed to giving its full cooperation to the federal authorities to ensure that the vaccination programme in Penang will be carried out successfully.

"And I am prepared to be the first individual to receive the vaccination," he added.

Chow said Malaysia has now entered an important phase in the fight against Covid-19, which is mass vaccination.

"We had very limited success in winning the battle against the pandemic over the past one year, and we've had to pay a heavy price as many have died or have been infected by the virus. Consequently, our socio-economic development and the people's livelihoods have also been severely affected.

"While continuing with the 3-Ts strategy of Testing, Tracing and Treatment in our fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, the mass vaccination programme gives hope that we can be on the road to recovery.

"It is my earnest hope that the mass vaccination programme will be successful in saving lives and livelihoods.

"Therefore, I call upon all Penangites to support the mass vaccination programme to make it successful," he said, adding that more information on the programme would be shared with the people to ensure mass participation.

Meanwhile, Deputy Health Minister Datuk Dr Noor Azmi Ghazali advised the people not to be worried about the vaccination.

"We hope the people will give their consent when it is time for them to be vaccinated," he added. - NST
