The Malaysian Council of Former Elected Representatives (Mubarak) has urged Umno to accept the offer of the deputy prime minister (DPM) post to avoid a three-cornered fight between Perikatan Nasional, BN, and Pakatan Harapan in the next general election.
Mubarak president Abdul Aziz Rahman said if the three-cornered fight occurs, Umno will no longer be able to rise again after having fallen in the 14th general election (GE14) and losing its hold on the prime minister post for the first time in Malaysia's history.
“If Umno holds the post of DPM, the grassroots members will have a high confidence level to face GE15 because their position is more secure.
"At the same time, it will end the speculation there are efforts for Umno to cooperate with Harapan which most Malays cannot accept," he claimed, according to an Utusan Malaysia report.
According to Abdul Aziz, Umno's top leadership have agreed to the offer in order to strengthen the party ahead of GE15 and give priority to what he called Malay-Muslim political survival.
This narrative doesn't seem to account for Malay-Muslim leaders present in PKR, Amanah, Warisan, Pejuang, and other parties.
The issue of the DPM post has been re-discussed recently when the PN leadership was said to want to give the post to Umno, and the matter was also said to be considered by the top leadership of Umno.
The rumours received various reactions, both from within Umno and political analysts.
Political analyst Jeniri Amir considers it a reasonable move but Selangor BN Information chief Isham Jalil described it as a desperate attempt by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to preserve his position.
Umno Veterans secretary-general Mustapha Yaakub said the issue was irrelevant when the country is hit by an emergency, and he himself is of the view that the Umno Supreme Council will not agree with the offer.
Last month, the Prime Minister's Office said there was no truth to claims that a deputy prime minister would be appointed.
However, in October 2020, it was reported that Muhyiddin was waiting for Umno's choice of DPM but would not accept Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi due to the court cases still pending against him. - Mkini
