KUALA LUMPUR: Anyone who fails to furnish their identification documents when checked by the police can be arrested without a warrant, says Datuk Seri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani (pic).
The Deputy Inspector-General of Police said the law is clear under the National Registration Act 1959 and the National Registration Regulations (PPPN) 1990.
"Failure to disclose identification documents when checked by the police is an offence under Regulation 25(1)(n) of PPPN 1990.
"It carries a prison term of not more than three years or a fine not exceeding RM20,000 or both," he said in a statement on Wednesday (Feb 17).
Acryl Sani was commenting on a statement in a news portal which stated that the police have no right to detain or arrest any individual who fails to bring or disclose identification documents when checked.
"That statement is in direct contrast to the National Registration Act 1959 and the PPPN 1990," he added.
Acryl Sani reminded the public to always bring along their identification documents as required under Regulation 6 of the PPPN 1990.
"The public should also give their cooperation to the police when inspections are being conducted," he added. - Star
