‘Malacca Move’ not initiated by Harapan - PKR source

The "Malacca Move" that is rocking the state government was not initiated by Pakatan Harapan, said a well-placed PKR source.

Instead, the source said it was an internal conflict in the ruling state coalition.

"First, I want to stress that this 'Malacca Move' was not an effort by the federal or state Harapan.

"Malacca Harapan has never acted to topple the state government since they themselves were ousted.

"This is a domestic issue among state government assemblypersons who are not happy with Chief Minister Sulaiman Md Ali," the source said.

The source added that the unrest had been ongoing for two weeks and involved at least assemblypersons who are dissatisfied with Sulaiman.

Speculation is rife that the quartet consists of former Malacca chief minister Idris Haron (Umno-Sungai Udang), Nor Azman Hassan (Umno-Pantai Kundor), Noor Effendi Ahmad (Bersatu-Telok Mas), and Norhizam Hassan Baktee (Independent-Pengkalan Batu)

Noor Effendi and Norhizam's were previously with Harapan. Their defection helped contribute to the coalition's downfall in Malacca.

Meanwhile, the PKR source confirmed that Harapan chairperson Anwar Ibrahim met with the coalition's 11 Malacca assemblypersons in Petaling Jaya, Selangor last night.

"There was various feedback regarding the current issue in Malacca.

"However, in general, all in attendance agreed to join in if there was an offer from the new government," he said.

A separate source told Malaysiakini that at least four Malacca DAP lawmakers disagreed with the move, saying it was unethical.

In a related development, Malacca governor Mohd Ali Rustam is reportedly being self-quarantined after coming into close contact with a Covid-19 patient.

An Umno Malacca source said efforts to contact the governor have been unsuccessful.

The source said this may delay any possible change in government by at least two weeks. - Mkini
