Selangor increases allocation for opposition reps to RM400k

The Selangor government will increase the allocation for opposition assemblypersons from RM150,000 to RM400,000.

Coupled with another RM400,000 provided by the federal government to BN and PN assemblypersons, Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari (above) said the total RM800,000 will be equal to what government state assemblypersons receive.

Amirudin announced this during the tabling of Selangor's Budget 2022 in the state assembly yesterday.

For government (Pakatan Harapan) assemblypersons, the full RM800,000 is funded by the Selangor government as the federal government does not provide any allocation.

"In line with the ‘Kita Selangor’ spirit, the allocation for opposition state assemblypersons will be increased to RM400,000 for 2022 compared to RM150,000 now.

"The administration is also informed that RM400,000 is also channelled to them (opposition assemblyperson) through the federal government's Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU).

"This brings the sum to RM800,000, which is equal to what is received by government assemblypersons," he said.

Amirudin also announced that independent assemblypersons that are aligned with the government will also be provided with an allocation of RM500,000.

By convention, assemblypersons do not receive the whole allocation directly.

Instead, the state government will disburse the funds on an item by item basis based on what application an assemblyperson makes, such as funding for old folks’ homes, running community events, repairing homes and other projects.

"The decision is made based on the commitment that the people should be the priority, regardless of political views, in line with Selangor as a role model for Malaysia," he said.

Amirudin also noted that the federal government will start providing allocation to opposition MPs beginning next year and the Selangor government will also allocate an additional RM50,000 for MPs in the state for the management of their service centres. - Mkini
