Cops call up Ramasamy over ‘provocative’ post on conversion

Penang deputy chief minister P Ramasamy said he would definitely cooperate with the police as he had nothing to hide.

PETALING JAYA: Penang deputy chief minister P Ramasamy has been summoned to Bukit Aman this morning (Thursday) to give a statement related to an alleged “provocative” Facebook post which linked Perlis religious authorities to various issues concerning the conversion of Loh Siew Hong’s children.

When contacted, Ramasamy said he would be at the police station with his lawyers at 11am.

“I will definitely cooperate with the police. I have nothing to hide.

“I’m prepared as there was nothing religious at my end.

“I was just voicing out concerns by a mother who lost her children and now she has her kids back.

“This whole issue has become a religious and racial issue in the first place due to Perlis mufti Asri Zainul Abidin and his gang. The police should investigate Asri, too,” he told FMT.

Last month, police said they were investigating Ramasamy over his post which had sparked “dissatisfaction among various parties”.

He is also being probed under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for abuse of network services.

Loh’s three children were converted by the Perlis religious authorities without her consent in 2020.

On Feb 21, the High Court had granted Loh’s habeas corpus application to regain custody of her three children.

Judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah allowed her application after hearing submissions from her lawyers and counsel appearing for preacher Nazirah Nanthakumari Abdullah.

Ramasamy had been a vocal critic of the children’s conversion, stressing that it was a clear contravention of a landmark Federal Court decision in 2018 that conversion of minors requires the consent of both parents. - FMT
