Engage with state govts to end clash on unilateral conversion laws, says MP

The issue of the unilateral conversion of minors gained attention recently with the case of single mother Loh Siew Hong and her three children.

KUALA LUMPUR: The federal government has been urged to engage with state governments to resolve the clash on unilateral conversion laws.

Debating the King’s address in the Dewan Rakyat today, R Sivarasa (PH-Sungai Buloh) pointed out that several states have enactments which permit unilateral conversion, despite a Federal Court ruling in 2018 that states the consent of both parents is needed.

“The government has to take responsibility on this matter and not choose to ignore it and let the differences (in unilateral conversion laws) go on.

“I would like to suggest that the government engage with these states (that allow unilateral conversion) on how to end this issue.

“If necessary, the federal government has to be prepared to go to the Federal Court to resolve this matter,” he said.

The issue of the unilateral conversion of minors received national attention recently following the case of single mother Loh Siew Hong, who went to the Kuala Lumpur High Court to regain custody of her children who were converted in Perlis without her consent.

Forced labour

On the issue of forced labour, Sivarasa asked the human resources ministry to provide updates on the investigation into Malaysian companies whose products had been placed under a withhold release order by the US Customs and Border Protection.

The ministry had said on Jan 30 that it would call all companies facing US import bans over suspected forced labour practices to discuss immediate action to address the allegations.

Sivarasa wanted the ministry to outline to the House the measures taken to end forced labour practices, saying the image of the nation had been tarnished. - FMT
