Engineer Leong Wai Yie has become the first Malaysian to receive an award from the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO).
She was conferred the 2021 WFEO Gree Women in Engineering Award during a recent WFEO award ceremony in Paris, France.
The award was conferred by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) assistant director-general of natural sciences Shamila Nair-Bedouelle.
The Gree Women in Engineering Award, first started in 2018, is meant to recognise outstanding women engineers, said the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) in a statement today.
“The award recognises women engineers who have shown professional excellence and impact in their work, and are role models and leaders in their field,” read the statement.
IET said Leong is passionate about promoting equality, diversity and inclusion in engineering and leads the IET task force in these matters.
Among her achievements, Leong established a women-in-engineering mentorship programme for more than 1,000 female engineers, said IET.
The programme outcome demonstrated that women engineers who were assigned a female peer mentor experienced more belonging, motivation and confidence in engineering.
Leong also conducted more than 500 talks, seminars and conferences to mentor and support women in engineering.
She is currently the director of research excellence at Perdana University Malaysia, the vice-president of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia and the first woman chairperson of IET Malaysia, among others. - Mkini
