KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 1,877 cases of dengue fever were reported last week — a drop of 522 cases (or 21.8%) compared with 2,399 cases in the previous week.
Health director-general Dr Radzi Abu Hassan said one death due to dengue fever complications was also reported during the April 16-22 period.
He said 35,202 cases had been reported since Jan 1, compared with 11,921 cases for the same period in 2022, which is a big increase of 23,281 cases.
“The 22 deaths due to dengue fever complications reported were also high compared to six deaths for the same period last year,” he said in a statement today.
According to him, 116 hotspot localities were reported this week compared to 109 hotspot localities the previous week.
Of this, 62 localities were in Selangor, followed by Penang (32), Sabah (eight), Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya (seven), Perak (three), Kedah (two) and one each in Sarawak and Labuan.
Radzi said three cases of chikungunya were recorded during this week, with two cases in Selangor and one in Putrajaya.
This saw the cumulative number of chikungunya cases rise to 120 cases thus far this year.
The ministry is not letting down its guard against Zika either. A total of 888 blood samples and 33 urine samples were screened but these results were all negative.
Radzi hoped those celebrating Aidilfitri pay attention to the cleanliness of the environment as various types of containers have the potential of becoming breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes.
“Check and destroy breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes, indoors and outdoors. Make sure there is no stagnant water anywhere.
“Aedes mosquitoes only need minimal water to lay their eggs.”
He also advised those who go for sightseeing activities to use insect repellents to prevent mosquito bites, especially by Aedes mosquitoes. - FMT
