PETALING JAYA: The sessions court in Baling, Kedah, has charged 40 people, including 35 foreigners, with trespassing into the Bukit Enggang forest reserve, located in Sik, last January.
Sinar Harian reported that Malaysians Poh Chu Yuan, 21, and Ho Chung Meng, 54, pleaded not guilty before sessions court judge Najwa Che Mat to separate charges brought against them.
No pleas were recorded from the rest of the accused, who included three other Malaysians – Wong Ning Ham, 54, Tai Chan Weng, 56, and Wong Siew Lin, 58 – and 35 foreign nationals as they did not understand Malay.
The foreigners consisted of two Chinese nationals, 31 Myanmar nationals and two Nepalis aged 18 to 50.
All were accused of entering compartment 12 of the forest reserve without a permit between 9pm on Jan 31 and 3am on Feb 1.
They were charged under subsection 47(1) of the National Forestry Act 1984, adopted by the Kedah government under the National Forestry Enactment (Application) 1985, and punishable under subsection 47(4) of the same Act.
If found guilty, they face a maximum fine of RM10,000 or imprisonment for up to three years, or both.
The court granted bail of RM5,000 to the five Malaysians with one surety each, while the two Chinese nationals were granted bail of RM7,000 with two sureties.
The accused were also ordered to surrender their passports to the court. - FMT
