Former Baling MP Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim’s appointment as Kedah Regional Development Authority (Keda) chairperson is not a done deal and is being reviewed, according to a report.
The report by Sinar Harian today quoted Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim as saying that Azeez’s (above) appointment, which his deputy had announced last Wednesday, has not yet been officially made.
“I will discuss with Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi regarding one of the appointments for which the (appointment) letter has yet to be sent.
“This includes the proposed Keda chairperson which we will review, so there is no appointment yet,” he said in Ipoh today.
Anwar was reportedly responding to Bersih’s statement on March 20 questioning another two of Zahid’s appointments; that of former Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki as Mara chairperson and Kelantan Umno chief Ahmad Jazlan Yaakob as the chairperson of Felcra.
The electoral watchdog had also questioned former Amanah vice-president Husam Musa as Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad (SPNB) chairperson.
It had called for reforms so that appointments to government-linked companies and statutory bodies will be made transparently to people with the right qualifications, and not merely offered as a “political reward” to secure support.
Anwar reportedly responded to this saying these appointments are not being made for listed companies, and each appointment is made based on an individual’s qualifications.
“Don’t assume GLC appointments are like before. We have imposed conditions (on the appointees) to perform their duties and not spend more than what is allocated and their allowances are also limited according to their respective qualifications,” he was quoted as saying.
Azeez is currently the Kedah Umno deputy chairperson and was cleared last year of corruption and money laundering charges related to road projects in Perak and Kedah.
His Keda appointment is not the first appointment by Zahid to come under scrutiny from the prime minister.
Zahid had announced Jazlan’s Felcra reappointment in December last year, only for Anwar to say less than a week later that the appointment has been postponed.
On March 15 this year, Zahid announced Jazlan’s reappointment again, but this time with Anwar’s approval. - Mkini
