Bestinet wants Charles to apologise, retract 'misleading' statement

Bestinet Sdn Bhd has demanded an immediate apology and retraction by former Klang MP Charles Santiago for alleging that the company is controlled by a “major labour broker”.

The company expressed disappointment over Charles’ “untruthful” and “misleading” allegations, saying the DAP politician was “clearly misinformed” on the nature of its business.

“Bestinet would like to place on record that all matters regarding the recruitment process of foreign workers, including the number of recruitment agents, are discussed and agreed upon on a government-to-government level between the government of Malaysia and the labour source countries.

“Bestinet’s management, including the founder, is not involved in nor privy to this process.

“Bestinet takes these allegations very seriously and reserves the right to take all necessary steps to claim damages and losses from these allegations,” it said in a statement today.

Yesterday, Charles reiterated calls for the government to terminate the Bestinet portal to make the migrant worker recruitment process transparent.

Bestinet is a portal which administers the government’s migrant management system.

The former parliamentarian also pushed for the Prime Minister’s Office to handle the intake of foreign workers, instead of the Home Ministry and Human Resources Ministry.

Describing itself as an IT company that developed the Foreign Workers Centralised Management System for the government, Bestinet refuted that it acts as a recruitment agency.

The company also denied it is involved in the migrant worker recruitment process in Malaysia or any labour source countries, including Bangladesh.

Bestinet founder investigated

In July last year, it was reported that the MACC raided Bestinet’s headquarters, investigating the selection of 25 Bangladesh recruiting agencies tasked with supplying workers here.

According to a report by The Vibes, citing a Bangladesh news site, Bestinet’s founder – a Bangladesh national - was not detained.

However, the founder was among several others interrogated over the selection process of recruitment agencies.

The report, which quoted a Malaysian diplomatic source, said the founder was also investigated for his connections with several politicians – including cabinet ministers.

While there was no mention of the 25 companies being accredited for workers recruitment in Charles’ statement yesterday, Bestinet explained that Putrajaya had, in fact, accredited 100 companies.

“Bestinet is committed to responsibly conducting its business and does not engage in unethical business practices.

“The company’s goal is to be a positive presence in the markets in which it operates and to support the government in enabling a transparent, fair, and abuse-free environment for foreign workers,” it added. - Mkini
