CID places cops at MCMC for social media probes

Bukit Aman and MCMC have agreed to boost the capabilities and expertise of their officers in intelligence gathering, investigation and prosecution.

PETALING JAYA: Two officers of the CID are to be placed at the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to help with investigations into social media postings, especially ones that are inflammatory in nature.

The officers will be from the federal criminal investigation department at Bukit Aman, Bernama reported.

MCMC said the initiative will help boost the capabilities and expertise of officers from the two enforcement agencies in terms of intelligence gathering, investigation and prosecution.

The decision to have police officers stationed at MCMC was decided following a meeting today between MCMC chairman Salim Fateh Din and CID director Abd Jalil Hassan today.

“The meeting also discussed the need to strengthen investigation and enforcement of social media content related to race, religion and royalty.

“This kind of cooperation will continue from time to time taking into account the latest requirements in enforcing the provisions of the country’s laws,” MCMC was quoted as saying.

The plan to have police officers at MCMC comes in the wake of the arrest of a man in Penang yesterday suspected of uploading racist and threatening posts on Facebook.

Earlier today, DAP lodged a police report about a viral TikTok video, which accused the party of running the show in the unity government.

The widely-shared video had blamed DAP for the government’s move to review the teaching of Islamic studies subject in schools, land intrusion in Pahang by durian farmers, and the legalisation of firecrackers.

Last month, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim warned against the sowing of racial or religious hatred, saying he had instructed the authorities to be on the watch for any attempt to “fan the flames of hatred” among Malaysians.

Anwar’s statement came in the wake of a police investigation into blogger Badrul Hisham Shaharin over his Facebook post linking an agency under the youth and sports ministry to Christian evangelism. - FMT
