KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court here has temporarily returned Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman’s passport to allow the Muar MP to attend two international conferences next month.

Justice Azhar Abdul Hamid ordered the passport to be returned to the Muda president this morning after deputy public prosecutor Afif Ali did not object to Syed Saddiq’s application.

In his application, Syed Saddiq said he would be participating in an international course on drug policy in Switzerland for five days from May 1.

He will then attend and speak at the 2023 Asian Leadership Conference in South Korea, which will be held on May 15 to 18.

Azhar ordered the former youth and sports minister to return his passport to the court by May 20.

The defence in Syed Saddiq’s corruption trial closed his case on March 14. The court has yet to set a date for the verdict.

Syed Saddiq is charged with abetting then Bersatu Youth assistant treasurer Rafiq Hakim Razali in the commission of a criminal breach of trust (CBT) of RM1 million at CIMB Bank Bhd, Jalan Stesen Sentral 2 here on March 6, 2020.

He is also charged with misusing RM120,000 from the bank account belonging to Armada Bumi Bersatu Enterprise for himself by causing Rafiq to dispose of the money at Malayan Banking Bhd in Taman Pandan Jaya here between April 8 and April 21, 2018.

He is facing another two counts of money laundering involving two transactions of RM50,000 each, believed to be proceeds from unlawful activities, transferred from his Maybank Islamic Bhd account into his ASB account at a bank in Taman Perling, Johor Bahru, on June 16 and 19, 2018. - FMT
