Kedah Pakatan Harapan chairperson Mahfuz Omar intends to seek twice the amount of compensation from Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor in relation to a defamation suit following a Court of Appeal order.
Mahfuz was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian that he plans to file a cross-appeal in court to increase the damages from RM120,000 to RM240,000.
This comes after he alleged that Sanusi (above, right) had not settled the claim, although the payment period had been set for 14 days from the day of the judgement on Apr 3.
On Oct 9, 2019, Mahfuz filed a suit against Sanusi over a post uploaded on the latter’s Facebook account which linked Mahfuz to the opening of a Sports Toto gambling outlet in Pokok Sena, Kedah.
In November 2021, the High Court upheld the suit and ordered Sanusi to pay the damages. He then filed an appeal to the Court of Appeal to set aside the High Court decision but was dismissed.
“Sanusi needs to pay immediately because the High Court gave a 14-day period after the order was made.
“Back then, he asked for an extension because he wanted to appeal to the Court of Appeal. However, no amendments were made except that the compensation amount had increased from RM50,000 to RM120,000,” Mahfuz was reported as saying.
He said Sanusi should not wait until a court order is issued as the decision had already been made.
“It means you don’t have to wait for a court order to pay; just pay directly. But perhaps he wants to appeal to the Federal Court, then he has to tell my lawyer,” he added. - Mkini
