PETALING JAYA: Domestic trade and cost of living minister Salahuddin Ayub has advised consumers against panic buying during the upcoming festive season as there is sufficient supply of goods.
He said the ministry would implement the Aidilfitri maximum price control scheme on certain goods for 16 days from April 15.
Salahuddin said the scheme was aimed at creating a win-win situation with consumers benefiting from reasonable prices and traders not burdened for too long as the scheme would only be enforced for 16 days.
He said the ministry had no plans to extend the scheme as the 16-day period was sufficient.
“I understand that we celebrate Aidilfitri for a month but we need to consider the overall supply chain to ensure it benefits everyone,” he said.
A total of 30 items will fall under the price control scheme, including chicken, eggs, meat and seafood such as tuna, mackerel, catfish, and pomfret.
He reminded traders that they must display pink price tags for these items.
Failure to comply may result in a fine of up to RM10,000 or a compound of up to RM5,000 for individuals. Companies may be fined up to RM20,000 or compounded up to RM10,000. - FMT
