Duo nabbed are immigration officers, says Wisma Putra

 

Wisma Putra and the Malaysian High Commission in Dhaka will give its full cooperation to the MACC in its probe.

PUTRAJAYA: The two enforcement agency officers at the Malaysian High Commission in Dhaka, Bangladesh, who were remanded after they were suspected of receiving bribes are from the immigration department, says Wisma Putra.

In a thread on Twitter, the foreign ministry said the officers were temporarily placed at the High Commission’s immigration attaché office.

Earlier today, sources said two enforcement officers at the Malaysian High Commission in Dhaka were remanded in connection with the issuance of visas for Bangladeshi tourists and workers coming here.

The duo, a man and a woman, were ordered to return to Malaysia and were remanded for three days until today.

When contacted, MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki confirmed the officers had been placed under remand and said the case was being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act and Section 4(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (Amla).

It is uncertain whether the officers have been released.

In the Twitter post, Wisma Putra said it paid close attention to the integrity of civil servants under its ministry and those working in Malaysian diplomatic missions abroad.

It added that the Malaysian High Commission in Dhaka and the ministry would give its full cooperation to the MACC in its probe.

Sources with knowledge of the investigation said MACC had discovered “suspicious transactions” involving bank accounts belonging to the two suspects.

The sources said MACC had frozen more than 20 bank accounts and seized assets estimated to be worth RM3.1 million believed to belong to the two officers. The assets include eight plots of land. - FMT
