Fact-check: The taxi driver who walked 312km

Noorazlan Ismail’s 312km walk from Johor to Kuala Lumpur for another round of Employees Provident Fund (EPF) withdrawal had made headlines. But there is widespread scepticism regarding his feat.

The 49-year-old taxi driver commenced his journey from the Skudai toll on the North-South Highway (Plus) on March 28 and turned up at Istana Negara on April 3.

Noorazlan had documented his walk on social media but stopped updating his progress on March 30 when he arrived at the rest area in Machap, Malacca.

Based on his earlier social media updates, it took him three days to complete the 60km stretch, which means he walked a distance of 20km a day.

From the Machap rest area, the father of five covered 252km to reach Istana Negara over the next three days.

Based on his average speed in the first three days, Noorazlan would have needed another 12 days to complete the trip from the Machap rest area to the palace.

Even if he had managed to increase his speed, he would have had to walk 84km per day to reach Kuala Lumpur by April 3.

Assuming that he needed 14 minutes to walk 1km, this meant that Noorazlan would have to be on the move for 19 hours daily to reach his 84km goal, therefore leaving him with just five hours for sleep, rest, refreshments and prayer.

The above does not take into account the weather, road conditions, and traffic. Furthermore, Noorazlan’s foot-powered trip took place during the fasting month.

Age is another factor. Completing the task within the stated time frame is almost impossible unless he has experience in running marathons or long-distance walks.

When 36-year-old actress Sharifah Sofia Syed Hussein embarked on her walk to protect tigers last year, it took her nine days to complete the 235km journey from Taman Negara, Pahang to the Kuala Lumpur High Court.

Noorazlan, upon arriving in Kuala Lumpur, had a “chance encounter” with Perikatan Nasional MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan, whose coalition is also pressing the government on the EPF withdrawal and showed up at Istana Negara donning a suit and flashing a broad smile for the press cameras.

Wan Saiful stressed that none of it was planned and attributed the meeting to divine intervention. - Mkini
