Umno Youth moots political education programme for teens
Koel: Understanding politics and the individuals' rights and duties are paramount. Malaysians are comparatively naive and immature about political matters, including the structures of the country, and their roles as citizens.
This is why we hear the most pathetic and juvenile debates in Parliament and among people in general. So to that extent, a simple syllabus for secondary schools should take the place of moral and religious studies.
Anyone insisting on moral and religious studies can take them as optional subjects outside school hours. But if this is just an excuse from Umno to brainwash kids into voting for their party, no thank you!
No more propaganda subjects! No hero-worshipping of some leaders and building cult personalities. We have too many dubious characters in our politics so let's dispense with this need to teach kids bootlicking skills.
Steven Ong: The government and Education Ministry should stop all political talk using race and religion to influence the students from the first day in schools and universities.
They first used religion to shape the minds of the students when they were very young and now after losing out to the new religious bigot party, they try to influence the university graduates with their last chance for survival?
Start educating young students on morals, good principles, civic responsibilities, ethics, the rights and wrongs in life, evil and good, but without referring to any religion.
Once they know the facts and truths and are convinced by them, then the voters will know who to vote for the well-being of Malaysia.
To get the best for the students, the government has to invite all learned scholars from each religion and implement the universal and common belief on rights and wrongs, good and evil.
Teachings from one single religion are insufficient and the evidence is there for all to see if they want to see.
Proarte: Yes, teenagers need to be politically educated to equip them for the future.
The unity government should formulate a syllabus which focuses on uniting all Malaysians who comprise different races and religions.
There should be mutual respect and acceptance that no race or religion will be discriminated against so unity can be achieved.
Malaysia will be a welcoming home for all Malaysians wherever their ancestors came from even though they are not Orang Asli. No citizen will be regarded as pendatang (foreigners).
The new political education mooted by Umno Youth will emphasise a "Malaysian Malaysia" to realise the aim of the unity government.
Hoyo Hoyo: The only political education needed is honesty, responsibility, fairness, hard work and self-control. These virtues will prepare our youths for the 16th general elections (GE16):
Honesty - telling the truth, do not deceive others and obey the law. Be trustworthy and upright. Avoid dishonest politicians.
Responsibility - ensuring duties are done correctly. Be accountable and complete the tasks according to the target. Vote out irresponsible politicians.
Fairness - treating everyone with an open mindset and respect. Keep your moral judgment on other races or religions to yourself. Delete TikTok messages from false religious politicians.
Hard work - dedicating effort and energy to accomplish tasks for an honest reward. There is no free lunch. Reject bribes from politicians for your vote.
Self control - educating our youths on this require a repeat of virtues (1)(2)(3) and (4).
Amadeus: Political education programme for students? Really? Why? All I read is about trying to sway votes for so and so party.
Why, must it be political? Isn't a programme to be better Malaysians or world citizens a better thing?
Teach the younger generation about humanities, global warming, civic consciousness, love for the betterment of the country.
Leave race and religion out of it, as there is a race division, which is a sad fact. All those years of race and religion divide haven't been good for the country.
Look at the school-going kids these days, whatever happened to having friends of different races in your circle?
After all, under our skin and colour, we are all the same. We bleed red not purple, blue or green blood.
A thinking generation is more meaningful than politics.
Freethinker: Please focus on subjects that matter to them. If they are interested in politics, they can always take mass communication as their main subject later in university.
Schools are meant to prepare them for adult life, not who to vote, please focus on the right priorities. Some subjects in school have taken more study time than they should.
Put development into critical thinking, science, mathematics and economics. Many know little about economics and keep asking for government handouts.
Maya: Political education should not be via any political party. There can be many other ways of teaching politics and elections without being biased. The teens must be given the space to think and decide what is best for them and their future.
Looking at how our politicians behave, speak and argue, they are the last people who should be allowed anywhere near schools or even teach politics. It is best to allow teens to think and not be spoon-fed silly ideologies. - Mkini
