The government saves an estimated RM100,000 a month from cabinet members taking a 20 percent pay cut as well as from Anwar Ibrahim not taking his salary as prime minister.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah, Sarawak Affairs and Special Duties) Armizan Mohd Ali said this comes up to RM1.2 million in savings a year.
He noted that the cabinet members agreed to take a pay cut of 20 percent a month until the country’s economy recovers.
“As soon as the new government was formed, the unity government had taken early steps of saving by not taking a salary as prime minister as announced by the prime minister himself.
“In addition, the cabinet has also agreed to accept deductions of 20 percent from their basic salary every month out of concern for the people until the country’s economy recovers,” Armizan (above) said in a written parliamentary reply.
He was responding to Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman who asked how much the government is saving from the ministers’ pay cut as well as how these savings can benefit the people.
After Anwar was sworn-in as prime minister on Nov 24, 2022, he said he would not be taking a salary.
This includes his salary as the finance minister.
The cabinet members subsequently said they would take a 20 percent pay cut until the country’s economy is doing better. - Mkini
