The couple who were probed for “gross indecency” has sought help from Tebrau MP and lawyer Jimmy Puah, claiming that they were accosted by people posing as police personnel.
In a statement today, Puah said two individuals who allegedly uploaded a video clip of the couple allegedly threatened them and demanded to see their identity cards.
“They followed the young couple after they did not heed their threats and fled the scene.
“The couple were followed until they were near the Taman Pasir Putih police station (in Pasir Gudang, Johor),” said Puah.
He said he will seek more details from the police on this matter tomorrow.
“I will urge the police to take action against those who uploaded the video clip,” he said after meeting the couple today.
The couple were detained on Thursday (April 6) over the video clip which depicted them in a compromising position in a car at a parking lot.
They spent a night in detention and the police obtained a two-day remand order yesterday to probe them under Section 377D of the Penal Code for “gross indecency”.
However, according to Oriental Daily, the couple were released yesterday afternoon.
‘Meaningful to jail them?’
Meanwhile, Puah noted that the penalty for Section 377D was mandatory imprisonment for up to two years.
“In my opinion, if they are convicted, this will cause (the couple) irreparable damage.
“There’s no denying that what they did was immoral. However, they never hurt anyone. Now, they are the biggest victims.
“Is it meaningful to jail them?” he asked.
The young couple were photographed in handcuffs and detention overalls when they were brought to the Magistrate Court for the remand process.
This prompted public outcry over the media coverage and the conduct of the police over a possible violation of the Child Act 2001 which bars the depiction of minors who are under investigation at the pre-trial, trial, or post-trial stages. - Mkini
