Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal explained that his remarks about people selling their kidneys to make ends meet were based on posts on Facebook groups seeking Employee Provident Fund (EPF) withdrawals.
According to The Star, the Perikatan Nasional (PN) lawmaker clarified that his intention was to convey the grievances of those who are in need of EPF withdrawals and not to condone or encourage organ trading.
“Whether their claims are true or not - it’s up to the authorities to investigate and validate their needs for the withdrawals.
“In no way do I support or condone selling organs as it is illegal, and those who accused me of being so have politicised the matter.
“I, however, stand by my statement that the rakyat is desperate and might even resort to illegal activities just to pay off their debts if the EPF withdrawals are not allowed,” he said.
This comes after Wan Ahmad Fayhsal (above) faced backlash over his remarks, in which he alleged that people were selling their kidneys to cope with financial difficulties, in an effort to emphasise the urgent need for another round of EPF withdrawal.
Bandar Kuching MP Kelvin Yii urged the Bersatu leader to file a police report to support his claim, describing it as a “serious allegation” - pointing out that selling organs is illegal.
In addition, doctor-cum-organ donation expert Dr Abdul Jabbar Ismail lamented that Wan Ahmad Fayhsal’s claim can hamper organ donation efforts.
Prior to this, there were speculations that Wan Ahmad Fayhsal may have garnered this information based on a viral video on TikTok, where user “daddy_keacy” claimed he was driven by desperation to sell his kidney.
However, there was no confirmation from the MP himself on the matter.
Yesterday, the TikToker issued an apology for his claims, saying he made the video while he was in debt but assured that nothing came out of it. - Mkini
