The Umno supreme council has unanimously decided to apply for a royal pardon for former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak.
They will also present to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong memoranda signed by all 191 Umno division leaders, said Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.
“After examining the issue, the supreme council respectfully submits a request to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to consider granting a full pardon to Najib in accordance with the power vested under Article 42(1) of the Federal Constitution,” Asyraf said in a statement today.
This comes after Najib’s application to review his conviction and sentencing in the RM42 million SRC International corruption case was dismissed by the Federal Court in a majority 4-1 verdict on March 31.
Asyraf said the Umno supreme council takes note of the disappointment and concerns raised by the Umno grassroots, especially in view of the dissenting judgment by Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Abdul Rahman Sebli.
Abdul Rahman, who chaired the five-person Federal Court bench, said in his sole dissenting ruling that the previous apex bench chaired by Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat defeated Najib’s right to a fair hearing.
Asyraf said the supreme council had received memoranda from 191 party divisions, including the Youth and Women wings, which requested the Umno leadership to defend Najib, who is a former Umno president.
In 2018, after Pakatan Harapan won the 14th general election (GE14), the coalition also applied for a royal pardon for Anwar Ibrahim, who was subsequently granted a full pardon by the Agong.
Najib is currently serving a 12-year jail sentence due to his conviction in the SRC International case.
Meanwhile, the former prime minister still has a number of ongoing cases.
This includes the RM2.28 billion 1MDB corruption case which is still undergoing trial.
Another two cases which have yet to go to full trial are the RM27 million SRC International money laundering case and the RM6.6 billion International Petroleum Investment Company (Ipic) criminal breach of trust case. - Mkini
