PETALING JAYA: Sungai Besar Umno chief Jamal Yunos has been appointed a member of the Selangor Umno leadership, amid bribery claims against him.
Jamal received his appointment letter as Selangor Umno committee member from the party’s state chief Megat Zulkarnain Omardin today.
The letter stated that he would be in the state leadership until 2026.
Jamal’s appointment comes amid claims that he had bribed 12 Umno delegates to vote for him as the Sungai Besar Umno chief in the party’s recent elections.
He was reportedly issued a letter by Umno disciplinary board chairman Hafarizam Harun on Friday, which stated that he had violated the party’s constitution and membership rules.
In the letter, Hafarizam said Jamal had, at about 6.15pm on March 17, given a bribe of RM1,000 to each of the 12 delegates from the Parit Sungai Haji Dorani, Parit 3 Jalan Lama, Sungai Limau, Simpang Tiga Loji and Pekan Pasir Panjang branches.
Jamal denied these allegations and claimed that his opponent who had lost in the division-level polls was behind the claims. However, he did not name the person.
Jamal had defended his Sungai Besar Umno chief post last month in the party polls, defeating former Selangor menteri besar Khir Toyo. - FMT
