KUALA TERENGGANU: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has given an assurance that the federal government will give immediate attention to landslides around Kenyir Lake for the safety of the people of Terengganu.
He said that although Terengganu is run by an opposition party, the federal and state governments must face and solve the people’s problems together.
“I was just told that the problem at Kenyir Lake is the occurrence of landslides and I have discussed with the chief secretary to the government (Zuki Ali) that if it is really a pressing issue, if it is to protect the safety of the Kenyir Lake area and Terengganu because of water overflow and the damage that may occur, then surely I will give it immediate attention.
“Although the menteri besar is from another party, that is not an issue. If the problem affects the people, then we must face it together,” he said at a breaking of fast event with the people of Terengganu at Universiti Malaysia Terengganu in Kuala Nerus.
The menteri besar, Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, and the chief secretary were among 1,500 people who attended the event.
Anwar emphasised his stance to improve cooperation with state governments, including those run by opposition parties, for the benefit of the people.
The federal government had provided additional allocations in the 2023 budget for those states, including Terengganu, besides announcing flood mitigation projects that also involve Terengganu and Kelantan.
The two states and Kedah are controlled by PAS, while the federal government is run by a coalition of Pakatan Harapan, Umno and parties from Sabah and Sarawak.
Anwar also said that he is open to criticisms and censure from state governments against any of his actions and decisions provided they do not engage in personal attacks that divide the people.
“I will improve cooperation with the states, I just hope that they, especially the opposition at the federal level, can also give their cooperation and provide a path so that we can do it in a good way,” he said.
Samsuri urged political leaders to shed their old and shallow political ideologies in order to maintain good federal-state relations.
He said the prime minister’s visit to Terengganu today was proof of the commitment and spirit of proactive relations between the federal and state governments.
The visit would also directly strengthen ties and thus lead to a balanced regional development in all states. - FMT
