DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang has expressed hope that Umno will be stronger than both PAS and Bersatu in the future to ensure the success of the Anwar Ibrahim-led administration.
In a statement today, Lim said the only way for Umno to return to its former glory was for the party to return to its original nation-building principles and policies of the Federal Constitution and Rukun Negara.
Umno, said Lim, must also commit to judicial independence and making the fight against corruption a "top priority".
"I hope Umno leaders will ponder this question, for Malaysia has lost its way by deviating from the original nation-building principles and policies of plural Malaysia endorsed by the first three prime ministers, who were also the second, third and fourth Umno presidents," he said.
Lim has come under fire for recently stating that the unity government would unravel itself should former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak - who is currently serving jail time - be granted a pardon.
He argued that Najib's influence on Umno, if judged from Umno's performance during the last two parliamentary elections, was limited.
Apart from Lim, PKR veteran Hasan Karim has also expressed reservations on a pardon for Najib.
However, the duo have come under fire from Umno supreme council member Puad Zarkashi who claimed that Pakatan Harapan was fearful that Najib's return to active politics would strengthen Umno.
Lim said he hoped that politicians will turn Malaysia into a model country for tolerance, harmony and inter-ethnic understanding as envisioned by Umno's former presidents.
