BANGI: Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman says it is best to put professionals in charge of government-linked companies and agencies instead of politicians.
Drawing on his experience as the youth and sports minister in 2018, Syed Saddiq said having a board that was almost entirely free of political appointees made a difference in the performance of the ministry’s agencies.
He said professionals, such as senior or former civil servants and industry experts, helped him revamp the agencies.
“For example, Malaysia Stadium Corporation (MSC) was previously headed by many different politicians,” he told reporters after an Auku forum at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia last night.
“But we appointed a corporate man, Tony Fernandes, who was supported by a professional board, and for the first time, MSC made a profit instead of fully relying on government subsidies.”
Fernandes, the AirAsia boss, was appointed as the head of MSC in 2018 when the statutory body was making a loss of RM11 million.
Syed Saddiq, who is also the Muar MP, was asked to comment on the recent political appointments made by the unity government.
Netizens and civic groups had said the political appointments were inconsistent with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s push for reforms and good governance practice.
On the upcoming state elections, Syed Saddiq said Muda had begun its internal discussions on the number of seats it intended to contest.
However, he said any seat allocations would be much easier if Pakatan Harapan (PH) had made a decision on Muda’s application to join the coalition.
“I have met with Anwar twice and brought the matter up with him, but he said it (Muda’s application to join PH) needs to be discussed by the presidential council,” he said. - FMT
