KUALA LUMPUR: Mosque committees usually invite "ustazs (religious scholars)" to deliver sermons and religious talks to their congregations during Ramadan.
Saidina Abu Bakar As-Siddiq Mosque in Bangsar broke away from the usual practice and invited a Sikh doctor instead to deliver a lecture on quitting smoking last Friday.
This was shared by a Twitter user @saifyakhtar with a video clip showing the bearded doctor clad in a red turban delivering the lecture to the congregation at the mosque.
"Lecture topics in mosques are nothing out of ordinary and usually lean towards religious values. Last Friday's lecture reminded me of the golden age of Islam, where mosques were also repurposed as a palace of knowledge.
"I encourage more mosques to do this. Invite more experts regardless of their faiths.
"This is how we can attract people to the masjid (mosques) (as) a place of worship and knowledge," said the Twitter user earlier today.
The video went viral with 16,700 views and counting.
Netizens lauded the mosque's effort to educate its congregation by inviting a non-Muslim to deliver his lecture there.
