‘No call yet from MACC’, Sivakumar says after two aides nabbed

Human Resources Minister V Sivakumar today said he has yet to be summoned by the MACC over an ongoing graft probe into migrant workers’ recruitment practices - which led to the arrest of his two senior officers.

"Not yet. If I'm called, I'll willingly go to have my statement recorded,” he told reporters in Kuala Lumpur.

Sivakumar, however, evaded a final question posed by the press on whether he would go on leave pending conclusion of the MACC's probe - a call made earlier today by Bersatu's associate wing over a potential conflict of interest.

Earlier in his speech at the minister’s high tea function with Indian NGOs held to usher in the Tamil New Year, Sivakumar urged all quarters to not make any speculations on the case which ministry sources previously said amounted to RM97 million.

"The arrests were part of the investigation process.

"If there is a report against a person, the MACC will probe that person. If there are valid grounds, they will be charged in court, otherwise, they will be released.

"(In this case) investigations are still in the early stage. So don't make any conclusions. Let the investigation takes its course," said Sivakumar.

He further insisted that he would maintain a neutral stance and not make further comments that could compromise the probe.

Yesterday, the MACC remanded the private secretary to the Perak DAP leader. The arrest brings the number of people nabbed in connection with the anti-graft agency's probe into migrant worker approvals to three.

Aside from the private secretary and another senior officer to the minister, MACC also has a businessperson from Ipoh, Perak, under custody.

The person is believed to be linked to a recruitment agency.

It is believed that the MACC's probe is also focused on other individuals within the ministry as well as its agencies. - Mkini
