No data leak in early morning 'cyberattack' - Immigration DG

No personal data from the Immigration Department got compromised or leaked in a cyberattack early this morning that saw its official website being shut down for maintenance, said director-general Ruslin Jusoh.

"The department would like to stress that there was no data leak and advise the public to refrain from making speculations which may trigger confusion or unrest," he said.

Ruslin (above), in a statement, confirmed the cyberattack by an individual who goes by the name “CaptainSmok3r” was detected at 2am this morning.

"The cyberattack was in the form of defacement and caused the immigration department's website's front page to be replaced with another image.

"However, other links related to the department's services were not affected by this incident," said Ruslin.

Earlier today, it was reported that the Immigration Department has shut down its website for maintenance.

“Please be informed that the Malaysian Immigration Department’s website, which is www.imi.gov.my, is under maintenance.

“For any questions, please contact the Online Inquiry System (SPO) at https://eapp.imi.gov.my/. Any inconvenience is deeply regretted,” the department said in a Facebook post.

Ruslin also confirmed that the department’s Information Technology and Records Division is working with Cybersecurity Malaysia to strengthen its digital security and the website is expected to return online later today.

The site has been inaccessible on both mobile devices and computers, hampering the department’s services including online passport applications and payment. - Mkini
