Veteran politician Lim Kit Siang has warned that the government could self-destruct if former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak is accorded a royal pardon.
"The immediate problem to the survival of the Anwar (Ibrahim's) unity government seems to be internal rather than external.
"I think it's a fallacy to believe that Umno can only return to its glory days if Najib is pardoned.
"On the contrary, I believe Najib's pardon now will not benefit Umno at all but will benefit PAS and Bersatu instead, apart from causing the collapse of Anwar's government," Lim said in a statement today.
Last week, the Umno supreme council unanimously decided to appeal to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to pardon Najib, who's currently serving a 12-year jail term for corruption in the SRC International case.
The council will also present to the monarch a memorandum signed by all 191 Umno division leaders.
Elaborating, Lim said the only way for Umno to restore "greatness" is to take the lead in a reset and return to the original nation-building principles for a plural Malaysia.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Azalina Othman Said recently said that Umno is no longer involved in the royal pardon process for Najib, and the ball is now in the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's court.
Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim had also claimed that the government would face a major disaster if Najib is given a royal pardon. - Mkini
