Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the topics of politics, citizenship issues, and democratic rights are already included in the national school syllabus.
She said this when asked about Umno Youth’s proposal on hosting programmes in schools to boost political awareness among students.
“We (the ministry) have put emphasis on topics such as democracy, institutions and citizenship issues, as well as the rights of Malaysians in our history and general education textbooks.
“These are taught gradually,” Fadhlina said after attending the Education Ministry’s Integrity and Corruption-Free Forum in Putrajaya today.
The Nibong Tebal MP added that aside from the school syllabus, her ministry also intends to hold programmes at educational institutions to increase political awareness among youths.
On April 5, Umno Youth chief Dr Muhammad Akmal Saleh mulled that it is important to prepare those who would be eligible to vote in the 16th general election (GE16).
He added that with Undi18 in place, those who are now in Form 2 will be able to exercise their voting rights by the time GE16 is called.
He also stressed that the school programmes should follow proper procedures. However, he did not go into the specifics of Umno Youth’s planned programmes.
Previously, Fadhlina said there are no specific restrictions against politicians from either the government or the opposition from holding or attending programmes on school grounds.
However, she said there must be prior permission for this.
Further, a circular issued by the ministry also states that programmes or activities that are political, racial, or extreme in nature are not allowed at education institutions.
Political campaigning is barred, the circular read.
The display of political logos during programmes involving politicians is also prohibited. - Mkini
