Rethink ‘zero opposition’ plan, Harapan rep urges Malacca CM

Ayer Keroh assemblyperson Kerk Chee Yee has urged newly-minted Malacca Chief Minister Ab Rauf Yusoh to reconsider his reported vision to have zero opposition lawmakers in the state assembly before it passed the Anti-Party Hopping Enactment.

Taking to Facebook, Kerk (above) noted how Malacca had suffered at the hands of political frogs and that the federal-level anti-hopping law was passed in Parliament last year to end such antics.

"Anti-hopping law is not only about fostering political stability but also serves to restore confidence among Malaysians in the integrity of each of our individual elected representatives.

"Even though Malacca has not officially passed the state version of the anti-hopping law, the spirit of upholding the decision made in Parliament and various other states should be observed by the government and political leaders," said Kerk.

"Hence, I strongly urge the Malacca chief minister to rethink his position," he stressed.

So far, seven states have enacted the anti-hopping law - Penang, Perak, Perlis, Negeri Sembilan, Kelantan, Sarawak and Selangor.

Last night, Rauf reportedly indicated hope to have zero opposition in the state as there are only two of them left from Bersatu, while the remaining 26 seats comprise BN and Harapan – which are now part of the government bloc.

"Only two state assemblypersons are left on the opposition aisle in the state. Therefore, before the anti-hopping enactment is tabled, I hope Malacca will have zero opposition," Rauf was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.

"I hope they will be with us, and if that happens, then I will be the happiest man in Malacca," said Rauf at a breaking fast function with the media last night.

BN recorded a landslide victory in the 2021 Malacca state election, which saw the coalition winning 21 out of 28 state seats.

The latest line-up of 10 state-exco members sworn-in after Rauf's recent takeover of the chief minister's post from Lendu assemblyperson Sulaiman Md Ali also included Harapan's Kesidang assemblyperson Seah Shoo Chin.
