SAMM is back, will hold rally against govt soon - Chegubard

NGO Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM) plans to wake up from its hibernation to take to the streets to protest the new government which it described as being “deaf” to the people’s complaints.

SAMM founder Badrul Hisham Shaharin (above), better known as Chegubard, said the group made this decision after posts pushing for SAMM to hold a May 1 rally went viral on social media over the past week.

“I and other old SAMM friends have yesterday met to discuss and we agree… to stop our hibernation and prepare to become the main driver of the masses to face this deaf government which we call the mixed regime of Harapan Nasional.

“However, after discussing with many NGOs and political parties, May 1 is not a suitable date (for a rally) because it is right after Hari Raya… but we all agree we have to have a large mobilisation.

“The regime should be forced to listen; otherwise, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi should be made the shortest and most failed ruling coalition in Malaysian history,” Chegubard said outside the Bukit Aman police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today.

SAMM will definitely mobilise for a rally sometime soon, but the date will be announced in the near future, he added.

Chegubard said SAMM, which was started as a radical nationalistic youth movement, went into hibernation in 2018 after the fall of the previous BN administration.

However, under the new government, he said bumiputera’s rights and the federal religion are not being respected and the people’s lives are getting more burdened with the increasing cost of living.

Chegubard also accused the current government of practising nepotism and cronyism.

In preparation for SAMM’s return and the upcoming rally, Chegubard said the group will hold a closed-door retreat on April 30, which will include paving the way for young activists to take over the group’s leadership.

Following that, SAMM will make appearances in Kuala Lumpur on May 1 to explain the guiding principles of its movement, he said.

“The summary is simple. On May 1, there will be no public mobilisation but we have started our discussions and are confident that mobilisation must be done.

“Anwar was born on the streets. If he remains deaf, the streets will topple him,” Chegubard said. - Mkini
