Six accused persons who were forced to remain in prison over the weekend were finally released on bail today.
Lawyer Alvin Tan said their bailors were requested to go to the bail counter at the Kuala Lumpur court complex at 10am today.
“Their lawyers and the bailors arrived at the court at about 9.30am. The court officers were already there and preparing the bail applications for the six accused.
“With the assistance of the court’s officers, the bailors successfully completed the bail procedure at about noon. The six were finally released on bail,” he was quoted as saying by Free Malaysia Today.
Tan alleged last week that the bail counter closed early on Thursday (April 20), forcing the six accused to spend the weekend in prison despite being granted bail by the court.
He alleged that the bail counter closed at 2.53pm despite a notice stating that office hours were until 4.30pm.
The six accused claimed trial for alleged criminal conspiracy with the intention to cheat.
The Federal Court’s chief registrar’s office denied the allegation, stating that the bailors were not present when the counter closed at 4pm, which is the normal closing time for the counter throughout the month of Ramadan.
In a report by Bernama, the chief registrar’s office said the presence of bailors to process bail for the accused is part of a procedure that must be adhered to because their presence enables the court to know the identities of the bailors.
The process also allows the counter to verbally explain to the bailor the terms, conditions, and responsibilities of the bailor throughout the bail period. - Mkini
