A TikToker has issued an open apology for claiming in a viral video that he has been driven by desperation to sell his kidney.
The netizen, who goes by the username daddy_keacy on the video-sharing platform, said he made the claim due to debt issues that he faced.
"So I made the video as a 'shortcut' to whoever wanted to buy a kidney.
"And I did not realise that the video was set to Fyp," daddy_keacy (above) said in the three-minute video uploaded on TikTok yesterday.
To the uninitiated, Fyp is an acronym for "For You Page", which refers to the page on TikTok that is filled with recommended content and videos that the app thinks users will enjoy the most.
Creators often hashtag their videos #fyp to try and get their video on the For You Page of other users, to help increase views and brand visibility.
A check by Malaysiakini found that the TikToker, who describes himself as a chef cum event organiser, among others, had posted a series of videos since March 25, explaining and justifying to his 2,337 followers the reason for his decision to sell his organ.
He admitted using footage taken when he was attending a job interview in Singapore, to gain more viewers and "affiliates", but acknowledged that nothing came out of it.
It is not ascertained if daddy_keacy's claim was the one referred to by Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal, who in Parliament last week claimed that Malaysians are struggling to survive, to the extent that some had to sell their kidneys.
Thus, the government should approve another round of Employees Provident Fund (EPF) withdrawal, the Bersatu Youth chief claimed.
Malaysiakini has reached out to Wan Fayhsal for comment and is awaiting a reply.
Elaborating, daddy_keacy issued an open apology to the Malaysian and Singaporean governments for making false claims.
"I hope that the Singaporean government would accept my apology.
"I also would like to apologise to the Malaysian government for implying that people are driven to sell their organs out of desperation. Times are hard, but it is not that bad."
He also apologised to his followers over the matter.
DAP's Bandar Kuching MP Kelvin Yii had previously demanded proof from Wan Fayhsal over his claim, which he said was a "serious allegation."
In addition, doctor-cum-organ donation expert Dr Abdul Jabbar Ismail has lamented that the lawmaker's claim can hamper organ donation efforts. - Mkini
