Umno Youth moots political education programme for teens

Umno Youth is mulling hosting a programme for secondary school and varsity students to boost their political awareness.

Wing chief Dr Muhammad Akmal Saleh said the programme is important to prepare those who would be eligible to vote in the 16th general election.

"There is a proposal to do programmes at universities, but we will focus on schools too.

"With Undi18, during GE16, teenagers who are in Form 2 now can vote by then," he said in a press conference after chairing his first Umno Youth meeting.

Akmal (above) stressed that the programmes would follow proper procedures.

"To go to universities and schools, we must follow the proper procedures.

"As a leader... we can't break regulations governing schools and universities," he said.

Akmal, however, did not go into the specifics of Umno Youth's planned programme.

Previously, Education Ministry had said that there is no specific prohibition against politicians from either the government or the opposition from holding or attending programmes on school grounds.

However, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said there must be prior permission for this.

Further, a circular issued by the ministry also states that programmes or activities that are political, racial or extreme in nature are not allowed at education institutes.

Political campaigning is specifically barred by the circular.

The display of political logos during programmes involving politicians is also prohibited. - Mkini
